It's Not Easy Being Green, Or Is It?

As I’m sure most of you know, today is Earth Day! And in honor of that I wanted to share with you some quick and simple tips to go greener in your home:

  • Recycle - Both refuse services in town, Alaska Waste and Solid Waste Services, offer curbside recycling services. It's recycling made easy! I started recently at my home and my kids find it to be pretty fun to sort the trash into the correct bins. It's educational too! Double win!

  • Don't Dump, Donate - Instead of throwing away old electronics, toys, clothes, shoes, etc. donate them. There are tons of places around town to drop off these items, or even have them picked up curbside. You get a tax write off too!

  • Insulate Your Home - If installing additional insulation is too big of a project or too costly an easy and stylish way to do this is to put up insulated blinds and/or curtains. It'll keep the cold out in the winter months and the hot out in the summer months, plus redecorating is always fun.

  • Swap Household Cleaners - There are so many amazing eco-friendly cleaners these days! Fred Meyer carries tons of options or you can go an even more sustainable route and shop H20 at Home products. H20 at Home is one of my newest obsessions. I have some of their cloths and towels, and I must admit they work better than any other product I've ever used, and they don't require soap or cleaners, just water!

  • Energy Star Bulbs - Next time a lightbulb burns out swap it with an Energy Star bulb. They offer high quality lighting while decreasing your electric bill.

  • Reuse Coffee Grounds - Take your old coffee grounds and feed them to your acid craving plants in your garden. Save money and make your flower beds happy.

  • Support Local Farmers - Farmers Markets will soon be opening back up for the summer season and would love your business! One of my favorites is the South Anchorage Farmers Market in the Subway Sports Centre parking lot at O'Malley and Old Seward. They are open every Saturday 9am-2pm and always have amazing local produce, prepared foods, and music.

Being green is easy and can even be fun. I hope you implement some of these tips into your routines and see a positive impact. Happy Earth Day, everyone!
